Could you use a Learning Analytic tool for tracking student activity in your Moodle discussion forums? The Participation Map is a completely new plugin for Moodle 2 which generates a qualitative graph (like a concept map) and quantitative statistics, creating a “data portrait” of the patterns of interactions between the students. It enables an instructor to quickly visualize the patterns of interaction between students, and gauge the level of collaboration achieved within groups. The latest enhancement of this tool can create a completely anonymized graph suitable for use outside of the classroom, such as in conferences or research papers.

I am the Learning Designer for the Faculty of Education at HKU, and also a candidate for the doctorate in Education.
