Investigations where students have free choice of different LMSs for the same course are lacking in the literature. Furthermore, HKU will soon adopt a new centrally-supported LMS. This inquiry set-up parallel LMSs for a large enrollment course. It revealed that most students used WebCT. Student reasons for choosing WebCT were i) habit, and ii) most other courses at HKU use WebCT. This suggests instructors still relied heavily on WebCT during the transition period. Student rationale for Moodle use spoke directly to the qualities of the LMS itself, namely the interface and the way it is organized.
